Directions to Xcalak

Xcalak is 422 kilometers -- about a four hour drive -- south of Cancun, the point of arrival for most travelers. The nearest city to Xcalak is Chetumal (196 kilometers south) with an airport and bus stations. Xcalak is not easy to get to from either of these cities using public transportation (bus) and most visitors rent a car. If you are traveling by bus, email us for tips and schedule info.

Driving from Cancun, take highway 307 south to the Cafetal-Xcalak turn off (about three hours south of Cancun and 45 minutes south of Felipe Carillo Puerto) and turn east, following signs toward Mahahual and Xcalak. Expect between four and five hours total from the Cancun airport to Xcalak.

If you are driving from Chetumal, take highway 307 north past Bacalar to the Cafetal-Mahahual turn off (about 60 minutes travel) and follow signs east toward Mahahual and Xcalak. Then turn south, following signs to Xcalak; expect two and a half hours total travel time.
